{"id":1871,"date":"2012-05-03T06:57:45","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T06:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ipads4teachers.com\/?p=119"},"modified":"2012-05-03T06:57:45","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T06:57:45","slug":"icabmobile-to-the-rescue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/2012\/05\/03\/icabmobile-to-the-rescue\/","title":{"rendered":"iCabMobile to the rescue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The problem<\/strong>: You need to share a file from a secure server with a colleague, but it is too large to attach to an email and you only have your iPad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The solution<\/strong>: Download the file with <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/internal\/iCabMobile_CallBack?openURLinTarget&amp;target=_blank&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Fapp%2Ficab-mobile-web-browser%2Fid308111628%3Fmt%3D8&amp;referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ipads4teachers.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iCabMobile<\/a>, upload it to Dropbox, share a link via Mail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The context<\/strong>: I am on the road with my family, with only my iPad, and a colleague needs a backup copy of my Moodle course right now. He does not have access to the server, so I need to download the file and send him a copy. Easy enough to accomplish in my office, or at home, but a bit more challenging when speeding down the Keiji Bypass in Kyoto.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate a good challenge, so I sent a mail to explain the situation and promise that I would work it out. After my experience <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ipads4teachers.com\/?p=43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using iCabMobile in the classroom the other day<\/a>, I knew that it would play a central role in the solution.<\/p>\n<p>The first step was to log in to my Moodle course using iCabMobile and create the backup. The backup process is all run server-side, so doing this from an iPad is no problem. Dealing with the file once created was the issue&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1447.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686056.9563\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1447.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: left; clear: both;\">As you can see in the image above, the file size, while only 72 MB, is still a bit large for a quick download and email. Tapping and holding on the link to the file brings up some options.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: left; clear: both;\"><!--more--><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-10331.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686132.2227\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-10331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I selected &#8216;Download File&#8221;, and immediately found myself looking at an error message.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1457.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686104.368\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1457.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"45\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1457.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get around this barrier, I opened up the Settings app, scrolled down to iCabMobile in the menu, and changed the Edge\/3G download limit from 10MB to 100MB.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1504.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686093.6816\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>With the limit raised, I was now able to download the file. Over 3G, while speeding down an expressway in Kyoto, the file downloaded in just over 10 minutes. Not exactly quick, but I had plenty of other things in the car to keep me busy&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1032.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686117.1348\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>With the file moved to my download folder in iCab, I now needed to find a way to share it. I did a long tap on the file to see what my options where, and by selecting &#8220;Open in External App&#8221; I received these options.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1513.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686064.9792\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Since Dropbox has a file-sharing feature, I chose to move the file there. This took quite a while. The process of uploading the 70+ MB file took over 15 minutes. I simply set the iPad aside to let it do its work, and played a little <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiritori\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shiritori<\/a> with the kids.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-949.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686082.518\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-949.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Once the file finished uploading I was able to simply click the &#8216;link&#8217; icon in the top right corner to create and copy a link to send to my colleague.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"text-align: center; clear: both;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1031.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" id=\"blogsy-1336029686147.5476\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edtechtesol.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/wpid-Photo-20120503-1031.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Useful? I don&#8217;t know. I think in the future, with a file of equal size, I might wait until I have a solid wifi connection, but it is certainly nice to know that this is possible. You never know when you might need it in a pinch.<\/p>\n<p>If you made it this far, I hope that you found this post useful.
